One of, if not the most, popular cosmetic procedures is Botox. People love Botox because it helps them look younger. Because Botox is a cosmetic procedure that people use to de-age themselves, many people wonder how old do you have to be to get Botox? Well, there are many factors that affect the answer to that question. If you want to prevent lines and wrinkles from appearing on your skin in the first place, then many dermatologists would suggest that you get preventative Botox as a young adult. On the other hand, if you only want to treat the lines and wrinkles that are already on your skin, it’s appropriate to get Botox when you’re middle-aged or older.

What Is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic procedure that reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the skin. By reducing the appearance of your skin’s lines and wrinkles, you’re making yourself appear younger. As a result, most people have Botox put in their faces.

To receive Botox, you must get injected by a needle that’s filled with a harmless toxin with a bacterium in it that’s known as Clostridium botulinum. This toxin helps relax the muscles within the area of the skin that it’s injected into.

Injecting the face with Botox is an effective way to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles because the skin in the face often folds and creases up when a person makes facial expressions or expresses any sort of emotion. This constant folding and creasing of the skin develops into permanent lines and wrinkles as one ages.

By relaxing the muscles that cause the skin in the face to move, fold, and crease, Botox is preventing the skin from forming lines and wrinkles in the first place. Because Botox is preventative, many dermatologists view it as the ideal way to de-age the skin.

At What Age Should People Receive Botox?

Part of the reason why people show more lines and wrinkles on their facial skin as they age, even though they’ve been making facial expressions that have caused their skin to fold and crease their entire lives, is that repetition builds permanence. Just think about it like this, the more you fold a piece of paper, the more defined the crease becomes. The same thing goes for your skin. The more times that you make facial expressions that cause your skin to fold and crease, the more defined your lines and wrinkles will become.

Thus, people are more inclined to show lines and wrinkles as they get older. It also doesn’t help that the skin naturally loses collagen and thins out as one ages, thus making the skin less resilient and easier to form lines as well as wrinkles.

Because people tend to develop more lines and wrinkles on their face as they age and Botox is preventative, many people wonder at what age they should start getting Botox. Should people get preventative Botox while they’re still in their youth to avoid getting lines and wrinkles later on in life? Or, is it better to wait to inject Botox in the skin until a person is older and lines and wrinkles are already forming on the skin?

Preventative Botox in Your 20s

When people are children, teens, or even young adults in their early twenties, their minds and bodies are still developing and their skin is highly resilient. Thus, there is no need to get Botox around that time in life.

Most dermatologists suggest that the earliest time to receive preventative Botox is in your mid-twenties. This is because you likely won’t see any lines and wrinkles start to appear on your skin until your mid to late twenties. New York City dermatologist and national medical director of AOB Med Spa Jody Levine, MD, even states that, “It’s possible to benefit from preventative Botox treatments starting as early as 25, but before that, the odds are low that you could have built up enough lines to worry about it.”

As time goes on, more and more individuals in their twenties are becoming aware of the benefits of preventative Botox. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 30% of people that receive Botox are in their 20s.

Preventative Botox in Your 30s

Depending on your genetics and how well you take care of your skin, you’ll likely just start to notice the appearance of lines and wrinkles on your face in your thirties as well. This is especially true if you’re in your early thirties. Thus, it’s wise to continue to use preventative Botox in your early thirties.

As people get further into their thirties, they’ll start to notice the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles more and more. In fact, it’s often around this time that people will start to visibly see crow’s feet and brow lines forming on their face. To prevent these lines and wrinkles from becoming more and more apparent, people in their mid to late thirties should continue to use preventative Botox.

Botox in Your 40s

Once individuals enter their forties, deep lines and wrinkles will likely start to set in their facial skin. This is especially true when it comes to lines around the eyes, forehead, and sides of lips.

This is around the time in life when many people start turning to Botox and even dermal fillers to de-age their skin. Individuals that capitalized on preventative Botox while in their twenties and thirties will likely have far fewer lines and wrinkles on their face at this time in life than most.

Botox in Your 50s

In your fifties, the lines and wrinkles on your face are much more obvious. The fact that many women tend to have drier skin around this time of life due to menopause doesn’t help. Individuals that chose to regularly receive preventative Botox in their twenties and thirties followed by some Botox in their forties will probably contain fewer lines and wrinkles than most people at this age.

Botox in Your 60s

When in your sixties, it’s best to get just enough Botox to help you look rejuvenated and less tired. Receiving Botox when in this age range will also give your skin a refreshing boost.

Botox in Your 70s

Older Botox patients in their 70s often desire to smooth out the lines and wrinkles on their faces. When doing this, they should receive soft Botox.

Botox in Your 80s

Even older individuals that are in their eighties can use Botox. This is especially true for individuals that still value their appearance.

The best time to use Botox for preventative measures is during one’s twenties and thirties. To maintain a youthful appearance and prevent facial lines and wrinkles from becoming deeper than they already are, individuals should continue making regular Botox appointments in their forties and fifties. Once individuals are in their sixties, seventies, and eighties, receiving soft Botox here and there is an effective way to upkeep one’s appearance.
