There are many disorders that can negatively alter a person’s personal life and confidence. For men, one of these disorders is erectile dysfunction. Luckily, there are many natural treatments, vitamins, and supplements for erections.

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability of a male to get or keep a penile erection. Without such an erection, men cannot take part in sexual intercourse. In fact, erectile dysfunction will also negatively affect a man’s libido.

ED affects more than 30 million men in the United States. Since most men view the ability to get an erection and perform sexually as a sign of manhood, experiencing erectile dysfunction can be embarrassing and emasculating. This is especially the case since many men experience erectile dysfunction as they get older

Due to the embarrassment that surrounds ED, many men who suffer from this disorder are hesitant to seek out help. As a result, it’s important for such men to at least understand the natural treatments, vitamins, and supplements for erections. That way, they can be proactive in the prevention or reversal of erectile dysfunction on their own.

Natural Supplements for Erections

There are many natural supplements for ED that work. In fact, many of these natural supplements are proven by research to help treat erectile dysfunction. Some of these evidence-based natural supplements for erections include:

1. Panax Ginseng

Panax ginseng, otherwise known as red ginseng or the herbal Viagra, has natural elements in it such as ginsenosides that improves penile erections at the cellular level. It also contains an anti-inflammatory effect within it and improves lung function and blood flow. These are all things that help improve the ability of a penis to get an erection.

Panax ginseng is one of the natural treatments and supplements for ED that work. This is proven through extensive research in seven studies in 2008. Individuals who plan to take Panax ginseng for erectile dysfunction should consume a dosage of 600 to 1,000 milligrams of the herb three times a day. Panax ginseng is very effective when treating erectile dysfunction in men with high lipids in their blood and metabolic syndrome.

2. Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola Rosea is a natural flowering and long-lasting plant that some research in one small study showed can help treat erectile dysfunction. Within this small study, researchers gave 26 out of 35 men 150 to 200 milligrams of Rhodiola Rosea daily for three months. The sexual function of all the men that took Rhodiola Rosea in the study increased substantially.

Rhodiola Rosea can help increase energy and reduce fatigue, which are two things that can also help improve sexual performance. Researchers need to perform more studies to fully understand the effects of Rhodiola Rosea and ensure the safety of individuals that consume the natural supplements for erections.

3. DHEA

DHEA, or dehydroepiandrosterone, is a natural hormone and dietary supplement that your adrenal glands produce. This hormone and supplement can turn into estrogen or testosterone in the human body. Many scientists produce this dietary supplement from wild yam and soy.

According to a Massachusetts male aging study, men with low levels of DHEA are more likely to experience erectile dysfunction. In 2009, 40 men participated in another erectile dysfunction study. Within this study, half of the men received 50 mg of DHEA each day for six months and the other half of the men consumed a placebo.

In the results of this study, the men who took the DHEA achieved and maintained an erection more often than those that didn’t. Studies even show that DHEA effectively treats erectile dysfunction in men with concurrent diabetes. Individuals with diabetes often experience hormonal issues and complications that interfere with blood flow to organs, which is partly what causes erectile dysfunction.

4. L-Arginine

L-arginine is a natural amino acid in the human body that helps make nitric oxide. Nitric oxide widens and relaxes blood vessels in the body. This, in turn, helps improve blood flow in a man’s penile area, which improves his ability to get an erection.

In one study, 31% of men with erectile dysfunction that took five grams of L-arginine each day significantly improved their sexual function. In another L-arginine study, L-arginine combined with the French plant product Pycnogenol improved the sexual ability in 80% of the study’s participants after two months.

Furthermore, after three months of L-arginine and Pycnogenol treatment, the sexual ability of 90% of the study’s participants also improved. Even when combined with other medications, L-arginine is typically safe and effective to treat mild-to-moderate erectile dysfunction.

5. Citrulline

Citrulline is an amino acid and the precursor to L-arginine. Similar to L-arginine and Viagra, citrulline relaxes blood vessels in the body. Thus, it also helps improve blood flow in the penis, which, in turn, improves the ability of men to get erections.

6. Yohimbe

Yohimbe is the active ingredient in Yohimbe bark. It is also an ingredient that is commonly found in supplements for male sexual enhancers. Seven clinical trials in a series of studies in 2015 found that Yohimbe is one of the effective supplements for erections.

7. Horny Goat Weed

This supplement for erections is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that treats fatigue and low libido. Reports and animal tests also suggest that horny goat weed is one of the supplements for ED that work. This is because horny goat weed has icariin in it.

Icariin is a substance with a mild inhibitor of PDE5. Viagra and Cialis use PDE5. Still, be cautious when using horny goat weed for supplements for erections though, as icariin tests have only been conducted on animals and in test tubes thus far. Therefore it isn’t the safest way to treat human erectile dysfunction.

What Natural Vitamins Help With Erectile Dysfunction?

On top of natural supplements, there are also natural vitamins that help with erectile dysfunction. Some of these natural vitamins include:

Vitamin D

According to a 2020 meta-analysis and another study done by the International Journal of Impotence Research, there is a direct link between vitamin D deficiency and severe erectile dysfunction. In fact, another study even found that young men that are low in vitamin D suffer from more severe erectile dysfunction.

Although it’s evident that there is a direct link between vitamin D deficiency and erectile dysfunction, scientists still aren’t exactly sure why. Some scientists suspect that it’s partly due to the fact that vitamin D reduces inflammation, improves blood flow, and stimulates nitric oxide production in the body.

Nitric oxide is a gas that the cells in the human body produce. It helps relax and widen blood vessels, which is vital to erectile health. Most people receive vitamin D through sunlight. Individuals can also receive vitamin D through foods like oily fish such as salmon or sardines, egg yolk, liver, and more. Individuals looking for natural vitamins and supplements for ED that work should start taking vitamin D3 supplements.

Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3, also known as niacin, can help treat moderate to severe erectile dysfunction. To get more vitamin B3, individuals can eat foods such as avocado, meats, turkey, peanuts, mushrooms, and brown rice.

Vitamin B9

A deficiency of vitamin B9, otherwise known as folic acid, is also directly linked to erectile dysfunction. Not only is vitamin B9 linked to erectile dysfunction, but it’s also linked to erectile dysfunction treatment.

This is evident in the fact that all of the 50 participants within an erectile dysfunction study experienced improvements in their erectile dysfunction symptoms when taking vitamin B9 supplements.

There is a synthetic and natural form of vitamin B9 in food products. Examples of foods that are rich in vitamin B9 include spinach, kale, brussels sprouts, broccoli, eggs, bananas, lentils, and beans.

Vitamin C

According to a 2017 review for ResearchGate, vitamin C helps increase blood flow and increase testosterone. So, vitamin C is great for men to consume if they want to improve their sexual performance.

There is no evidence that vitamin C supplements can improve erectile dysfunction though. Still, as a preventative measure, individuals should consume vitamin C every day. Foods that you can eat to get your vitamin C include sweet potatoes, guava and citrus fruit, greens such as broccoli and spinach, red and green peppers, and tomatoes.

Lifestyle Changes That Can Help Treat Erectile Dysfunction

Outside of vitamins and supplements for erections, there are various lifestyle changes that a man can make to help prevent and treat erectile dysfunction. Some of the most obvious lifestyle changes that help prevent and treat erectile dysfunction include:

Exercising

Exercising more often can help prevent or treat erectile dysfunction. This is because physical exercise helps blood flow through the body more easily. This means that blood will also flow more easily to the penis. Physical activity can even help reduce many of the underlying conditions that contribute to the development of severe erectile dysfunction, such as diabetes or hypertension.

Eating Healthier

Eating healthier is a positive lifestyle change that can also help prevent or treat erectile dysfunction. This is because being overweight leads to issues like hypertension and a decrease in bodily blood flow. These are things that can make erectile dysfunction arise.

In fact, according to a 2019 review, obesity is associated with a 40% increased risk of obtaining erectile dysfunction. Essentially, because eating healthy is the quickest way to lose weight and keep your body running smoothly, it’s an easy way to help treat your erectile dysfunction.

Reducing Stress

According to a 2017 review, stress can cause erectile dysfunction. This is because chronic stress can lead to heart issues such as hypertension and poor blood flow in the body. This means that chronic stress can also lead to poor blood flow to the penis.

So, if you want to help prevent or treat erectile dysfunction, it would definitely be helpful to reduce your stress levels. To do this you can do relaxing activities that you enjoy and such as yoga, meditation, listening to music, etc.

Quitting Smoking

Smoking damages blood vessels and decreases blood flow. This could, in turn, cause health issues like erectile dysfunction. In fact, a 2020 study found that tobacco exposure is directly connected to the severity of a man’s erectile dysfunction. As a result, the study also found that quitting smoking improved sexual function in males ages 30-60.
